Many cities boast impressive arenas. Nobles and commoners regularly gather to cheer for their favorite gladiators. Most gladiators are slaves. They live and die pleasing crowds, never knowing when they will face an insurmountable foe. Gladiators who perform well are rewarded with comfort, leisure, and women. Freedom is the greatest prize, but it is rare. Few gladiators live long enough to earn it. While all of them dream of it. The common dream is that a wealthy gambler will invest so much money into them that the gambler will also buy their freedom in attempt to insure victory. It is commonly referred to as “striking down the sun”.
There is another breed of gladiator though. These gladiators fight by choice in the arena. The most common reasons are for glory and wealth. The sinister among them arrange fights they can’t lose, sometimes killing slaves four and five at a time. The honorable among them fight only till their opponents are helpless to defend themselves rather than dead.
